The Evesham Branch: ex MR 5 Plank Wagon

Many of these wagons survived quite late into the ‘60s, often as Permanent Way or Private Owner wagons.

Some were even still used in general traffic, although only for less important duties.

LMS 25t Ballast Hopper

Built by both the LMS and the LNER to similar designs, these were used for the transport of ballast for permanent way maintenance.

Once they had arrived, the ballast was distributed between and beside the rails by the operation of three hopper chutes, controlled by the three hand wheels on the platform end.

Horses were a very expensive and delicate freight, and as such required special vehicles to carry them. Whilst the main part of the wagon conveyed up to three horses in padded safety, the compartment at the end was used to carry owners, trainers, jockeys and equipment.

If there was a large race meeting, the aforementioned passengers were often carried in a separate coach. All vehicles of this design featured steam heating and vacuum brakes.
