Page 2 of 7 ![]() BR Cattle vanAnother common feature in goods trains of this era was the cattle wagon. Not so well know was the fact that in summer months, many were converted for carrying fruit too. These wagons usually displayed a cast “Fruit” plaque on each side to distinguish them from regular cattle wagons. Both cattle and fruit carrying varieties are provided. ![]() BR 12t Fruit vanBuilt to a very similar design to the Banana van, these wagons featured air scoops on the side to help keep the fruit cool and ventilated whilst in transit. ![]() BR 12t VanfitDesigned to carry general goods, these wagons featured vacuum brakes throughout, to allow them to run at express speeds and speed up the transit of freight. ![]() LMS 12t Vent VanAn older design, still in regular use in the late ‘50s and ‘60s. Built by the LMS, they featured wooden bodies, but steel frames and pressed steel body ends. Some were later fitted with vacuum brakes, but the version seen here remains unfitted. |
